Case Study – Organisation Y

A local neighbourhood group, established in 2000 and run by volunteers, has been dedicated to supporting residents in the Ancient Parish of Handsworth. The group works to develop projects and activities that address social disadvantage and poverty within the community.

The group applied for grant support to establish a community garden project aimed at helping residents, particularly those struggling with anxiety and stress due to poverty. The proposed garden would be based in a derelict allotment area and designed as a space for relaxation and outdoor activities related to nature, offering therapeutic benefits for mental wellbeing.

A grant of £1,500 was awarded to cover the costs of hiring equipment to clear the allotment for cultivation and planting. The outcomes of the project were expected to provide local, disadvantaged residents with a peaceful sanctuary where they can improve both their mental and physical wellbeing through gardening and outdoor activities.

This case illustrates the positive impact that community-led initiatives can have on improving the health and quality of life for residents facing social and economic challenges.
